Boom Pump vs Line Pump

slider1

Transporting concrete can be difficult, especially if you don’t have the right equipment to do it. Concrete pumps offer a suitable, efficient solution to get concrete into those hard-to-reach-places. There are typically two different types of concrete pumps available – a boom pump and a line pump – and you’ll need to work out which pump is most appropriate for your needs.

As specialists in concrete pumping, consisting of a fleet of over 45 vehicles, we at Wright Minimix are ideally equipped to provide you with the differences between and advantages of using a boom pump and line pump. Read on to find out more.

What is the difference between a boom pump and a line pump?

A boom pump is typically mounted on a lorry, suitable for spurting copious amounts of concrete quickly and for pouring concrete at height. By contrast, a line pump is more suited for horizontal pumping as it’s a trailer-mounted, static concrete pump.

Boom Pumps

When would I need a boom pump?

Boom pumps feature an arm (or “boom”) that can be easily remote controlled to deliver and apply the concrete exactly where it needs to go.

Boom pumps are ideal for high-volume concrete pumping from great heights with a high level of accuracy.

It’s for these reasons why we suggest using a boom pump for more large scale sizeable commercial project.

Boom pump advantages

The biggest advantage of using such a pump is that you can pump a lot of concrete in a very short space of time, from considerable heights with great precision.

The boom is also a great benefit as it allows you to operate around a busy construction site, allowing concrete to flow down to areas that may have been otherwise unreachable.

Line Pump

When would I need a line pump?

A line pump features a long hose for pouring concrete horizontally. Whilst it cannot provide the same speed efficiencies as boom pumps, they tend to deliver concrete more accurately. It’s why we think it’s best that line pumps are used for smaller scale projects such as residential ones.

Line pump advantages

The main benefit comes in the form of its compact size, meaning they are much easier to transport around a job site. What’s more, the hose is more adaptable as it can extend to a great length.

Boom pump versus line pump conclusion

Overall, we recommend a boom pump for a larger commercial project where you need to pump lots of concrete fast. They also suit commercial jobs because of their higher reach.

On the other hand, if you’re considering a residential or smaller commercial build, we propose the use of a line pump. They have better flexibility and are more cost-effective than a boom pump. You may experience a slower concrete flow, but it should be more than sufficient to meet the needs of a smaller project.
